Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar II @ Swaran Maran :
Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar II ruled over Mutharaiyar Nadu comprising of modern districts of Tiruchirapalli, Tanjore and Pudukottai, from A.D.705 to A.D.745. His father was Maran Parameswaran and his grandfather was Koovavan Maran. He had 13 titles namely Sri Sathru Mallan, Sri Kalvar Kalvan, Sri Adhisagasan, Sri Maran, Abhimana Dheeran, Sathru Kesari, Thamaralayan, Serumaran, Velmaran, Sathan Maran, Thanjaikoan, Vallakoan and Vaanmaran. He was a Great Conquerer and a formidable Warrior. He was the Victor of 12 battles fought at Kodumbaalur, Manalur, Thingalur, Kaandhalur, Azhindhiur, Kaarai, Maangur, Annavoil, Semponmari, Thanjaisembulanattu Venkodal, Pugazhi and Kannanur. He had defeated the Pandiaya and Chera. He was pattron of Art and Literature. He built many temples and one of them was the Pidari Temple at Niamam, where four pillars bearing inscriptions of 27 stanzas narrating his victoreis and other achievements were errected. These stanzas were sung by four poets namely Velnambi, Elamperumaanaar, Koovavan Kanchan and Anirudhar. As a conquerer, patron of Art and Literature, builder of Temples and lover of Tamil, he stands on paar with the great South Indian Kings namely Narasimha Pallavan, Raja Raja Cholan and Maravarma Sundara Pandian.
